Are you Enzyme Depleted?

Trying to eat right, taking vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements? Getting plenty of exercise but still feel constantly run down and rung out? Maybe the body is saying enough! A diet largely comprised of cooked/processed foods that lack enzymes and unhealthy lifestyles could be the problem. Even if we try to eat only fresh foods, the enzymatic levels of foods today are reduced by long term storage as well as pesticide treatments and other toxins in our soils, water and air. Also, as we age, digestive problems can increase with elderly people commonly experiencing a general decline in their digestive enzyme secretion. If we supplement our diets with microbial sourced digestive enzymes we may find that this is an excellent or most suitable solution for the temporary relief of these conditions.

Cooking with oven

Food Enzymes are Destroyed by heat

As a result of any cooking process, whether it be baking, roasting, steaming, microwaving, canning or pasteurising, all of the natural enzymes contained in those foods are destroyed above a temperature of 48ºC, even on a low heat process of cooking for 10 minutes or more. The higher the heat as in microwaving and pasteurising; the shorter the time-frame for the destruction of the enzymes within that food.

Family cooking

International experts in the field of nutrition have made claims that enzymes really are the missing link to better health. There is a definite correlation between the amount of enzymes an individual possesses and the amount of energy they have. Increasing age causes a slow decrease in our enzyme reserves and as a result metabolism suffers.

You are what you can digest

“You are not necessarily what you eat, but what you can digest and absorb. Improved digestion through supplementation with microbial sourced enzymes should be the starting point in any health programme. When the body can obtain the energy it needs from the foods we consume when it needs it, the body will perform wonders.” Dr Edward Howell

Impaired Digestion

There are many possible factors which can interfere with thorough digestion including the following:

  • Overeating, which puts a great strain on the digestive system
  • Eating on the run
  • Eating while stressed or excessively tired
  • Drinking during or soon after meals, especially very hot or very cold drinks
  • Constantly eating cooked, processed or irradiated foods

Research…Enzymes for Better Digestion

Taking supplemental enzymes appears to improve digestion and the absorption of nutrients, suggests new research, recently commissioned by National Enzyme Company a US based enzyme manufacturer.

plant sourced enzymes

For Proper Digestion to Occur

The following microbial (plant) sourced Enzymes are required:

Lipases – break down fats as found in butter, cheese, and meat.

Proteases – break down proteins as is found in meats, nuts, and cheese.

Carbohydrases – (including Amylase and Cellulase) break down starches, sugars and fibres as are found in fruits, vegetables and grains.

We do not use the plant enzymes Bromelain and Papain in our general digestive formula because of their allergenic potential. If a person is allergic to pineapple, meat tenderisers, or other tropical fruits (or has sensitivity to salicylates), they may develop a reaction to Bromelain; this can also happen with Papain should they be allergic to papaya or other tropical fruits. Papain is from the latex (milky sap) of the papaya leaf or unripe fruit. Persons with latex allergies (i.e. surgical gloves, wound dressings and elastic waistbands) could develop allergic cross reactions over time.                             Always read the label.  Use only as directed.
